Baylis Street Bridge Load Testing

New South Wales

Project Overview

Engineering decisions are only as good as the evidence behind them. Following an earlier assessment that recommended a 16-tonne load limit, we were engaged to establish the true structural capacity of the historic Baylis Street Bridge through advanced testing and structural analysis. The investigation provided Council with a clear understanding of the bridge's condition and the information needed to determine the most appropriate long term management strategy.

Bridge Assessment

  • Completed site inspections, condition assessments and bridge load rating
  • Undertook a Level 4 bridge assessment and controlled load testing
  • Developed a detailed finite element model using ANSYS to assess structural behaviour
  • Assessed the performance of the deck, steel girders, masonry piers and abutments
  • Prepared technical reports detailing the bridge's condition and structural capacity

Outcomes

  • Confirmed the bridge remained in good structural condition with only minor section loss
  • Provided Council with evidence based recommendations to guide future rehabilitation and asset management decisions
