Bundarbo Bridge
New South Wales
Project Overview
Maintaining a reliable crossing over the Murrumbidgee River while replacing ageing infrastructure required careful planning and staged delivery. A new bridge was constructed approximately nine metres downstream of the existing crossing, allowing traffic to remain on the original bridge until the replacement was operational. MLEI supported the project through detailed structural investigations, bridge design and construction services, providing the engineering required to deliver a modern crossing while managing the transition from the existing structure. The project formed part of a jointly funded initiative to improve heavy vehicle access and strengthen the regional road network.
Bridge Assessment
- Detailed condition assessments established the structural performance of the existing bridge and identified key engineering constraints
- Level 4 load testing was undertaken to determine the bridge's operational capacity under live loading
- Finite element modelling using ANSYS validated structural behaviour and informed future design decisions
Bridge Rehabilitation
- Rehabilitation requirements were assessed as part of the strategic evaluation of the existing bridge
- Structural investigations identified opportunities to safely maintain the bridge during construction of the replacement crossing
Bridge Design
- Concept and detailed designs were developed for a new 105 metre dual carriageway bridge
- The bridge was designed in accordance with AS 5100 and Transport for NSW standards
- The new alignment was positioned downstream to maintain traffic throughout construction
- Design solutions improved safety, increased heavy vehicle capacity and enhanced long term network resilience
