Flinders Port Berth 6 Extension

South Australia

Project Overview

The Flinders Port Berth 6 Expansion forms part of the GatewaySA Program, increasing capacity at the Flinders Adelaide Container Terminal through a 136 metre berth extension and remediation works that will enable two 366 metre container vessels to berth simultaneously. MLEI provided temporary works engineering, developing the concept and detailed design of a reusable piling frame to support construction of the combi wall during both the Early Contractor Involvement and construction phases.

Our Scope

  • Concept + detailed structural design of piling frame
  • Finalisation and optimisation of structural member sizing
  • Welded and bolted connection design
  • Cross-frame design to support around-the-corner piling operations
  • Access system design, including stair and ladder arrangements
  • Vibro hammer operational and loading requirements
  • Design reporting and construction drawings

Design Challenges

  • The temporary works design needed to accommodate large marine piling equipment while maintaining installation accuracy, safe access, and operational efficiency.
  • Particular consideration was given to construction sequencing, equipment clearances, pile alignment tolerances, and the interaction between the piling frame and marine construction activities.
  • The temporary works solution supported safe, efficient installation of the combi wall while maintaining live port operations and minimising disruption to terminal activities.
