Gorgon Heavy Lifting Facility
Western Australia
Project Overview
Constructed as part of the Gorgon Project on Barrow Island, the Heavy Lift Facility supported the installation of large reinforced concrete caissons for the LNG jetty and associated marine infrastructure. The project required a controlled lifting system that could manage heavy loads, distribute forces safely and support efficient installation in a remote construction environment.
Key Project Elements Included:
Lifting System
- Detailed caisson lifting system design
- Six-point lifting frame
- Load spreading beam design
- Lifting arrangement using caisson tie bars
Structural Analysis
- Assessment of lifting stresses
- Load distribution during lifting operations
- Structural checks to support safe installation
Construction Methodology
- Installation methodology for 25 reinforced concrete caissons
- Construction phase technical support
- Off-site caisson preassembly strategy
The engineered lifting system allowed caissons to be preassembled off-site and installed efficiently on Barrow Island. The methodology supported a construction rate of approximately one caisson per day while maintaining controlled load distribution during lifting operations.
