Project Overview

The Papua New Guinea Dockyard project delivered major marine infrastructure to support vessel repair, maintenance and fit-out operations. The slipway was designed for ships up to 10,000 DWT, with a length of 110m and a maximum lightweight of 5,300 tonnes.

Key Project Elements

Slipway and Haulway

  • 264m long haulway on a 1:15 slope
  • 110m x 30m wedge car to support vessels during slipping operations
  • Double drum winch system with a maximum reeved pulling capacity of 5,600 kN

Transfer and Maintenance Areas

  • 100m x 14m transfer car for transverse vessel movement
  • 100m total transfer travel
  • Maintenance bays positioned off the transfer bays to provide ship repair work areas

Dry Dock and Fit-Out Berth

  • Dry dock barrier positioned 100m down the slipway
  • Dry dock capacity with a maximum water depth of 4m
  • 150m long fit-out berth for vessels under repair
  • Wharf water depth of 8.6m at low tide
  • Precast concrete panel wall retained by vertical steel soldier piles

This project demonstrates specialist marine engineering capability across slipway design, heavy vessel transfer systems, winch and haulage infrastructure, dry dock planning and fit-out berth structures.
