Motukea Export Wharf

Project Overview

The Motukea Export Wharf required temporary works to support construction of a cellular steel sheet pile gravity structure. The works centred on the safe and controlled installation of 23m long flat steel sheet piles forming 20m diameter cells.

Temporary Works Solution

The piling frame was designed to support sheet pile installation and maintain control during pitching and driving. Sheet piles were pitched and the cell was closed before pile driving commenced.

Key Design Elements

  • Piling frame to support 23m long flat steel sheet piles
  • 20m diameter cellular sheet pile structure
  • Two-ring frame supported on six piles
  • Adjustable ring levels to allow personnel access during pile pitching
  • Lowering of the rings as the piles were driven
  • Removal of the frame from inside the completed cell during backfilling

Key Success Factors

  • Innovative temporary works design
  • Close coordination with site personnel
  • Practical construction methodology for cellular sheet pile installation
  • Specialist temporary works capability for marine infrastructure delivery
