Project Overview

Developed to expand towage capacity at Port Hedland, the Port Hedland Tug Harbour supports the safe movement of vessels while reducing the risk of channel blockage as iron ore export operations continue to grow. MLEI, trading as Madsen Giersing (MG) at the time, was engaged by Lendlease to deliver the detailed design and construction phase technical support for the project's marine structures and coastal protection works.

  • Construction of 4 pontoons providing cyclone; berths for up to 8 new RAstar 85 Escort tugs (1065ft displacement)

  • Piled seawalls either side of the entrance channel to reduce cyclone wave penetration
  • Rock armour coastal protection
  • Two service pontoons at Nelson Point
  • Davit crane capable of lifting 3.6t at 12.5m radius
  • Mooring, navigation + access infrastructure

The completed harbour provides cyclone-protected berthing, expanded towage facilities and upgraded support infrastructure, strengthening the safe and efficient operation of one of the world's busiest bulk export ports.
