Project Overview
The emergency closure of Rawdon Island Bridge removed the only road connection between the island community and the mainland. We helped Council move from immediate public safety management to restricted reopening, permanent rehabilitation and final handover. Our involvement covered structural assessment, finite element modelling, rehabilitation design, procurement, contract administration and construction oversight for the 164 metre, eight span concrete bridge.
Emergency Assessment and Access Recovery
- Led the Level 3 structural assessment following the emergency bridge closure
- Completed underwater inspections, material testing, load testing and structural investigations
- Developed a Trigger Action Response Plan to manage structural and flood related risks
- Used finite element modelling to support the restricted reopening of the bridge
- Enabled the bridge to safely reopen under controlled traffic conditions within two months
Rehabilitation Strategy and Design
- Developed the rehabilitation strategy for the bridge piles, piers, girders and deck
- Designed specialised underwater pile repairs and concrete rehabilitation works
- Integrated scour protection and an impressed current cathodic protection system to improve long term durability
- Coordinated the rehabilitation design to extend the bridge's operational life
Construction and Contract Administration
- Acted as Principal's Authorised Person under the GC21 Design and Construct contract
- Managed procurement, contract administration and project delivery through to handover
- Reviewed contractor designs and monitored compliance with Council's requirements
- Coordinated Council, the contractor and specialist consultants throughout construction
